5 nights in the south in mid March

Bjl6
Hi
I will be in Iceland for the month of March at Nes in Skagastrond....and have been in Iceland 2 other times, several years ago, 1995 and 1998...I traveled around the ring road counterclockwise both times.
But it was may-June....so the weather will be different I am sure.
I am having my kids (18 and 21) visit for 5 days in mid March and I will have a car rental the entire time I am there.
I was planning an itinerary something like this (similar to the one you posted) but noticed last night that a visit to Jokulsarlon - Vatnajokull was not recommended until May.

Day 1
- Pingvellir Park - Gullfoss - Geysir

Day 2
Seljalandsfoss -Skogafoss - Dyrholaey - Vik

Day 3-4
Vik -Myrdalssandur - Kirkjubaejarklaustur - Skaftafell - Svartifoss - Svinafellsjokull - Breidarlon - Jokulsarlon - Vatnajokull

Day 5
Reykjavík - blue lagoon

What would be the best resource for finding places to stay (on a modest budget)? How best to make the decision where to stop in between those places? Must I reserve lodging in advance or can I wait?
Also, are you suggesting a path of sorts to follow each day or suggesting a stop in each place listed? It is hard to decide where to stay. When I was alone it was much easier....I simply planned day to day.

Also any tips about driving north to Skagastrond would be helpful. Lastly, should I rent a cell phone for my stay? Last 2 times I did not....

Hope this makes sense.

I recommend to look on www.visiticeland.com, you will find a complete list of places to stay. You must reserve in advance in order to be sure you will get space on these places.

Skagastrond is far away from south Iceland so I don't see any change you can do it with such a sort visit ;)

Thanks very much for your info regarding traveling in the south. My stay in Skagastrond is already determined. I will be at the Nes artist residency for the entire month of March. I am meeting my kids only for one week and thought traveling in the south would be the best thing to do with them. So I will drive down to Keflavik to meet them.

Regarding the posted itinerary I am still curious if your recommendation is to stop in all the places listed (for example all 4 places on day 2 ) or are those places simply the names of places one would pass through on the Ring Road between seljalandsfoss  and vik.

Hello,

You are very welcome!

There is a wonderful swimming pool about 40 km. away from Skagastrond. I totally recommend you to visit this place... This swimming pool is in a small village call Hofsos.

I also recommend you to read our great article about south Iceland, we made a lot of recommendations there what to visit and where to go!

Best regards from Iceland,

Hi Again
I am still trying to book 2 nights (day 3 and 4) in the south near skaftafell and/or the lagoon. What town or area would be the best place to stay (or best to search) for accommodation for two nights to explore Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon?
I would like to stay closer, further east, than Vik which is where we are staying on our 2nd night.
Thanks
Bonnie

Hello again,

Do not worry, just check the weather forecast and drive slowly.
It is not complicated if you have a 4x4 and you take all precautions.
