6+1 day trip in June

Jmanan
Hi there
I am planning a 7day trip in June with my wife and 11yr old son. I do not want to do the ring road as it seems rushed.
I would rather do day /2days trip to north west and south by self drive. My draft itinerary is as follows:

21 June: Reykjavík arriving 1pm from Edinburgh.
22 June: golden circle- night stay at Reykjavík
23 June: north west (Snaefellsjokull): stay near Kirkjufell near grundafjordur @ Saemundur’s cabin
24 June:  snaefellsjokull and surrounding areas, travel back to Reykjavík for night stay
25 June: South Island: plane wreck, skogafoss, black sand beach near Vik - stay at Vik or nearby place ( pls suggest)
26 June: diamond beach (Jokulsarlon) stay at Vik or nearby (mid way from Reykjavík and jokulsarlon to avoid too much driving)
27 June: back to Reykjavík: stay at night
28 June: leave 10.50am

I am not getting stay options in Vik or available options are too costly ($700+) is there any other alternate way to visit this area or stay somewhere else?
Please suggest other options if any...

Thanks
Manan

Hello Jmanan,

21 June: Reykjavík arriving 1pm from Edinburgh.

Okay. You could do the Golden Circle on June 21st. (summer solstice day). Yo do that in half day, no problem.

22 June: golden circle- night stay at Reykjavík.

Good also.

23 June: north west (Snaefellsjokull): stay near Kirkjufell near grundafjordur @ Saemundur’s cabin
24 June:  snaefellsjokull and surrounding areas, travel back to Reykjavík for night stay.

23rd and 14th perfect. Consider to visit Glymur waterfall in your way back to Reykjavik.

25 June: South Island: plane wreck, skogafoss, black sand beach near Vik - stay at Vik or nearby place ( pls suggest).

Very good. Look at here please.
26 June: diamond beach (Jokulsarlon) stay at Vik or nearby (mid way from Reykjavík and jokulsarlon to avoid too much driving).
Yes, good idea. You could also sleep ar skálakot between close to Skógar.

27 June: back to Reykjavík: stay at night

One day in Reykjavik is too much in my opinión. What if you visit Reykjadalur making a short bikini (around 1,5h total) and take a bath in a warm water river?
28 June: leave 10.50am

It would be better if you sleep last night close to Keflavik.

Have a nice trip!

Re: 6+1 day trip in June

Dear Berglind- thanks for valuable suggestions. I have changed my itinerary a bit and booked accommodation accordingly. Now, I will be traveling to Snaefellness peninsula on 22/23 staying at grundafjordur on 22nd. Have noted your suggestion to visit Glymur waterfall.

Question: What are the other must do in this area for 2 day trip ?

Planning to visit golden circle on 24th and then go to Vik directly without returning back to Reykjavík. Night stay for 24/25 at Pakgil/thakgil -

Question: a) can I make this trip in 1 day ie golden circle and going to thakgil cabin which is almost 200km from Gullfoss?

26 June: we will leave thakgil and come back to Reykjavík on the way plane wreck and other waterfalls....

27 June : we will be at Reykjavík- noted your suggestion of Reykjadalur, it looks very interesting.

I have already booked an Air B&B at Reykjavík so will have to leave early in the morning for airport,

Question: how early should I leave to catch 10.50 am flight? We will have to return car to blue lagoon car rental before catching flight.

Thanks again
Manan

Jmanan,

You´re welcome.

Regarding Snæfellsnes please read our aritcle.

Thakgil is a magic place. Yes you can do Golden Circle and arrive to sleep to Þakgil. And then 26 & 27th is perfect what you have planned (including Reykjadalur).

I´d recommend you to sleep close to the airport last night and then be at the airport around 9-9.30am if your flight depart at 10.50am.

Best regards,
Berglind
