6 Day Trip in July

Gary
My 3 teenaged daughters and I are visiting in mid July.  My plan is to rent a car and drive the ring road and so far have booked hotels in Reykjavik and Akureyri.  Want to visit Reykjavik for a day or so and Lake Myvatn Baths. We are looking for the scenic route with good hiking and excursions.  Please any suggestions or advice would be welcome.  So far itinerary is as follows:

Day 1:  Arrive in Keflavik - check in to Reykjavik hotel and explore town.
Day 2:  Day Hike within driving distance of Reykjavik (suggestions pls) - over nite in Reykjavik
Day 3:  Drive to Akureyri in the morning.  Explore town in the afternoon.  Any suggestions?
Day 4:  Drive to Siglufjorour in the am, drive to Lake Myvatn baths in the afternoon -
overnite Akureyri - Is this too much?  Any other suggestions??
Day 5: Depart to the East - suggestions of waterfalls, hikes, caves etc?  Where should we overnite?
Day 6:  Visit black sand beaches at Vik.  Any other suggestions of stops?  Overnite at Keflavik
Day 7:  We fly out in the AM.

Thanks!

Hello Gary,

Thank you for participating in our forum.

Day 1:  Arrive in Keflavik - check in to Reykjavik hotel and explore town.

Good.

Day 2:  Day Hike within driving distance of Reykjavik (suggestions pls) - over nite in Reykjavik.

Glymur watefall.
Esta Mountain.

Day 3:  Drive to Akureyri in the morning.  Explore town in the afternoon.  Any suggestions?.

I recommend you to visit Kjarnaskógur in Akureyri. And the Christmas house.

Day 4:  Drive to Siglufjorour in the am, drive to Lake Myvatn baths in the afternoon -
overnite Akureyri - Is this too much?  Any other suggestions??.

I think is too much to overbite in Akureyri. You can do it in Mývatn.

Day 5: Depart to the East - suggestions of waterfalls, hikes, caves etc?  Where should we overnite?.

Sleep in Seydisfjörður.
Visit Hengifoss and Litlanesfoss in Egilsstaðir. You will love it.

Day 6:  Visit black sand beaches at Vik.  Any other suggestions of stops?  Overnite at Keflavik.

Here you have our article about South coast:

Day 7:  We fly out in the AM.

If you can go to Blue Lagoon I´d recommend it.

Best regards,
Berglind

Thanks for the information.
I have heard that the Blue lagoon experience is overrated, crowded and expensive, and that the Lake Myvatn baths were the better choice.  Please advise.

Another looking for advice post - 6 full days Aug/September 2017

jsurgent
This post was updated on .
In reply to this post by Iceland24
I am travelling from Canada to Iceland, arriving August 30 around 6:00am then flying out on September 5 at 7:30am.  This gives me 6 full days. I am returning again for a short 2 day layover mid September.

I realize that I could do the entire Ring Road in those 6 days, but not likely do it justice and will likely make plans to return another time for a longer stay.
During the short 2 day stay in Mid September, I am planning on staying in Reykjavik and exploring the Golden Circle.

I am looking for advise on the first 6 days.  I am renting a car.
Here is the link to the Google Map of the trip plan so far.  https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Li3UCAyXieI3pROwRFdFtx4fwSg&usp=sharing
Day 1: Aug 30
     - Flight lands at 6:00am,
     - Stop at Raufarholshellir Underground Lava Tubes for a guided tour
     - Head South East to Stokkseyri for a kayaking adventure
     - Seljalandsfoss Waterfall
     - My first night is already booked and I will be staying in Seljalandsskóla, Seljaland at the
Nicehostel Seljaland.
     - Any other stops along the way?

Day 2: Aug 31
         - Travel from Seljalandsskóla, Seljaland to Kirkjubæjarklaustur, Iceland
         - Is there enough on this route that I can explore and take my time at?

Day 3: September 1
         - Thinking of spending the day exploring the National Park and taking part in tours etc, possibly spending the night somewhere around Hofn.

I am also looking for advice on how far I should go each day and activities along the way.  I am looking for the trip to be enjoyable and not feel rushed.  I love photography, light hiking and amazing outdoor experiences.  If I don't make it too far, but have a blast and see a lot in that time I am fine with that.

How far should I go before I turn around and head back in order to be near the airport sometime in the evening of September 4?

I was thinking about spending the second night somewhere between Vik and Hofn.

Thanks in advance for any and all input.

Dear jsurgent,

I think is clever to make the Ring Road next time when you have at least 8-10 days.

I recommend you to read our post about the South Coast to plan your itinerary.

http://www.iceland24blog.com/2013/10/south-iceland-complete-travel-guide.html

You could stop at Litla Hof between Vík and Höfn. I recommend you to reach Jökulsarlon and then go back to Reykjavík.
You have even time to explore Snæfellsnes Península for 1- or 2 days.

http://www.iceland24blog.com/2014/04/the-snfellsnes-peninsula.html

Have a nice trip!
