6 day trip to Iceland in January

Robin
Hello,

We are coming over to Iceland next month Sunday-Sunday (6 days, 6 nights), stopping by Reykjavik Sunday before starting our trip proper Monday afternoon. We are hiring a car and trying to plan our itinerary at the moment.

Initially we were planning on doing the full circuit, but it looks like with the weather and hours of darkness that might be a bit ambitious!

So the question is, with the time that we have, do we head South and see as much as we can along the South coast and across to Vatnajokull?
Lake Myvatn looks fantastic, and so does the Snaefellsnes peninsula but perhaps we have to leave those areas for a return trip (this our first trip and we would hope to visit again in Summertime). We are also undecided as to whether we should head North to see the Northern Lights or whether we have a decent chance in the South to see them in Jan.

Any recommendations or advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Robin

Hello Robin,

Thank you very much for your post,

My advice for you is that you stay on the south side of Iceland. First of all because in January you can expect all kinds of weather so planning a long distance trip is not advisable at that time of the year.

There are plenty of beautiful places to see in the south and six days is good enough time to see most of them. I recommend that you read the article we wrote about south of Iceland (here is the link)

Later when you have decided on an itinerary you can post it here and we will commend on it if you like.

Best regards from Iceland

Hi Berglind,

Thanks very much for your reply, it was really helpful in deciding where to go. Roughly, our plan is to stay over in Reykjavik for the first night after we touch down, then drive down the South Coast taking in the scenery along the way the following day (Skogafoss, glaciers Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull, Sólheimajökull glacier tongue, Dyrhólaey headland, Reynishverfi, Vik, Mýrdalssandur floodplains, Eldhraun, Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon) staying in the Kirkjubæjarklaustur area. The next day we are planning on checking out the Skaftafell National Park and Glacier Lagoon. We are then going to return to the Selfoss area to go snowmobiling on Mýrdalsjökull Glacier on day 4. After that its onto Thingvellir National Park to see the geysirs and waterfalls on day 5 and then going outside of Reykjavik to check out Hvalfjörður fjord, the Settlement centre, Deildartunguhver, Reykholt, Hraunfossar and Branafossar on day 6. Our last day will be near the blue lagoon before we fly:)

One last question, how essential is it to hire a 4WD? Is a standard car with snowtires suitable for this time of year?

Thanks again,

Robin

Regarding winter trips in Iceland I Just got back from Iceland for 6 days trip and I can already tell that I will need to visit in the summer in order to get the full picture. Iceland is so different in winter as the people there was telling us! And much less expensive since it’s not high tourist season. We saw Northern Lights every other night, amazing experience!. See you soon Iceland!
