Writing this letter I would like to ask you for and advise. In July and August I plan to come to Iceland, to make solo crossing of the whole country. I start from Cape Gerpir, the easternmost point and want to cross the middle of the island, to the Western Fjords, to Bjargtangar, westernmost point. It's about 750 km and 22days walk through Iceland's interior.
I have experience from few long-distance walks in Europe and Asia, including desert crossing in Iran and winter mountain thru-hike in Carpathians. I will be properly equipped and carring SPOT satellite messanger. What I'm seeking right now is any info about the route: was there anybody, who did East-West crossing of Iceland in the past?
I don't mind braking any records - that attitude would be unwise in harsh environment of interior. I would be really happy however, to know, if you have any information about individuals/groups, who maybe did similar trek? I no - was there anybody doing the shorter rourte from Gerpir to Sneffelsjokul? I would be glad to hear about somebody, whom I could ask for help and advise. At the worst case - knowing that nobody did that before will be also some kind of knowledge.
