Iceland early october (2 weeks+) suggestions needed

tsk1979
We are two people and visiting Iceland for 2+ weeks in early october(First Half)

We will rent a 4x4 for 16 days (Getting good deals from auto.is and bluecars.is as well as carsiceland). A duster/Vitara or Jimny for around 1000 EUR

Since most interior roads are closed, no point for a big 4x4 like the land cruiser.

I am wondering, should we book accommodation, or simply do it on the fly looking at weather reports.
Booking in advance does mean peace of mind, but it means, you cannot change your itinerary based on weather. For example, lets say southwest is going to be wet, so we stay in south east etc.,

Or am I over-thinking it, and weather may be dynamic everyday? When we went to Norway, often there were 3-4 days of non stop rain and clouds in a widespread geographical region with no sun. Is iceland more like sunny/rainy/cloudy/windy every few hours, or is it more like many continuous days of rain and thunder. If its dynamic, then we will book atleast some accommodations!

Second question, regarding the plan.

We plan it this way
We spend
7 nights in south. About 4 in south west, and 3 in south east.
Then we head north(Via F35 if open, or via ring road if closed).

Spend around 3 nights (myvatn area), and about 3 in north west corner.
Remaning 3 nights in the west fjords area and then back to Reykjavic

How does this sound?

Your guide is excellent, and it has details about everything we would need to see. 16 days seems like a good duration to see the best of iceland I guess.

Hello,

Thanks for your message,

If you are traveling in October I would recommend a 4x4 as you said... I personally prefer a Duster since it has a diesel engine so it will make you safe a lot of money in gas. Cars Iceland is the best company at the moment following comments from our readers.

I don't think you need to book accommodation in advance since October is low season...

Weather can be a surprise everyday as you said, just bring warm clothes and wait for the best!

I can tell you F35 Kjölur route will be close for sure in October so you need to think a bit more about your plan.
I recommend you to write here your complete plan so we can comment all around.

;)

Regards from Iceland,
Berglind

Thank you so much for your quick reply

Our plan is as follows.
We reach iceland last week of September, and start our journey around 30th september

The plan is
1. Start from Keflavik and go near Gulfoss - Stay 3 nights in a cottage there
2. Start from Gulfoss region and go east near Jokusarlon - Stay 3/4 nights there
3. If any highland route is open - Go to myvatn area via highlands, otherwise go via the ring road and spend 3 nights in myvatn area
4. Then go west, and reach northwest region, stay 3 nights there
5. Then head southwards, and stay for 4 nights about 2-3 hours north of Reykjavik in the western area

Will any highland route be open around 4-5 october? Or its the ring road definitly

Our plan is to see
1. All the major waterfalls (Godafoss, Gulfoss.... and the other biggies)
2. See some big glaciers visible from the road -
3. Church mountain
4. Western national park Snaefelles (we will stay 4 nights there at the end of our trip)
5. Try and make a drive to north west corner too
6. Myvatn lava
7. See alteast 1 lava cave.. and if possible, one glacier cave
8. landmannalaugar.

I have a confusion about south
Do we spend 3+3 nights (near Keflavik and then near Hofn) or choose a central position and stay for 6 nights?

Also myvatn area. 3 nights, or 2 are good

We have 16 nights :)

Hello again,

I will comment you plan:

The plan is
1. Start from Keflavik and go near Gulfoss - Stay 3 nights in a cottage there

Perfect

2. Start from Gulfoss region and go east near Jokusarlon - Stay 3/4 nights there

Perfect

3. If any highland route is open - Go to myvatn area via highlands, otherwise go via the ring road and spend 3 nights in myvatn area

I think you will go thru the ring road

4. Then go west, and reach northwest region, stay 3 nights there

Perfect

5. Then head southwards, and stay for 4 nights about 2-3 hours north of Reykjavik in the western area

Perfect

Will any highland route be open around 4-5 october? Or its the ring road definitly

I don't think so

Our plan is to see
1. All the major waterfalls (Godafoss, Gulfoss.... and the other biggies)
2. See some big glaciers visible from the road -
3. Church mountain
4. Western national park Snaefelles (we will stay 4 nights there at the end of our trip)
5. Try and make a drive to north west corner too
6. Myvatn lava
7. See alteast 1 lava cave.. and if possible, one glacier cave
8. landmannalaugar.

I don't think it is possible to see Landmannalaugar in October. You will need to make a tour with a company, they offer winter tours with Super Jeep.

I have a confusion about south

Do we spend 3+3 nights (near Keflavik and then near Hofn) or choose a central position and stay for 6 nights?

I will do 3+3

Also myvatn area. 3 nights, or 2 are good

We have 16 nights :)

Thanks for your quick reply.
Feeling a bit dissapointed about the F roads.
Wanted to atleast touch the icelands, if not do the whole hog.

I was looking around on flickr and saw snow less pics of F35 taken around 10th october. That got my hopes up!

Anyways, some more pointed questions, hope you do not mind :)
3+3 vs 6
You said 3+3 better than 6 in central south iceland.
Here is the dilemma. Central south iceland black sand beach area has some amazing cottages, cheaper too since its 6 nights. But then we will spend more fuel, so it will equalize.

Secondly, I was thinking since we are now booking in advance, if we book 3 in south west and 3 nights in south east, there is a chance that when we are in south west, there is rain in south west, and when we are in south east, there is rain in south east.

By staying in center, we can go either way depending upon the weather. Secondly, the central south area has some amazing waterfalls.

Due to these two reasons, and also the fact that there are some very very nice cottages in south central iceland a stones throw away from the ocean is tempting me.

Me and my wife both love to stay by water, and the ocean is well... ocean. If we do 3+3 there is no ocean stay chance, and secondly, south-east iceland has not many secluded cottages left

Landmannalaugar
Can't do it we know, but can we reach atleast one hot pool in the area. Maybe touch the edges. When coming to touch the edges, is it possible to do atleast 4-5kms of some F roads in early october to get a feel of icelands.

Stay patterns
So I guess its 6 nights in south, 2 nights in myvatn and 4 nights in northwest, 4 nights in west(Jules verne cottage seems nice). Or should I make it 3 in northwest and add another night to south? What do you suggest.

We love waterfalls and glaciers, and they are in the south.

Hello!

I don't mind ;)

Here is the dilemma. Central south iceland black sand beach area has some amazing cottages, cheaper too since its 6 nights. But then we will spend more fuel, so it will equalize.

I would recommend Reykjavík 3 nights + Vik 3 nights but you can always decide and try Vik 6 nights. It is a wonderful place as you said ;)

Landmannalaugar
Can't do it we know, but can we reach atleast one hot pool in the area. Maybe touch the edges. When coming to touch the edges, is it possible to do atleast 4-5kms of some F roads in early october to get a feel of ice lands.

You can try the F Road of Dettifoss (always if its open)

Stay patterns
So I guess its 6 nights in south, 2 nights in myvatn and 4 nights in northwest, 4 nights in west(Jules verne cottage seems nice). Or should I make it 3 in northwest and add another night to south? What do you suggest.

I am with your first option :)

This is a 18 days plan I did for friends:

Day 1. Reykjavík
Day 2. Golden Circle: Gullfoss, Geysir and Þingvellir (sleep in Selfoss)
Day 3. Seljalandsfoss waterfall, Skógarfoss waterfall, Dyrhólaey, Vík's black beach (sleep in Vík)
Day 4. Skatafell National Park (hiking), Svartifoss + Skaftafellsjökull  Glacier (sleep in Hof)
Day 5. Jökulsárlón glaciar lagoon. Day Tour in Vatnajökull Glacier (sleep in Hof)
Day 6. Icelandic East Fiords (sleep in Eskifjordur)
Day 7. Hengifoss and road to the north visiting Dettifoss (sleep in Myvatn)
Day 8. Myvatn area (sleeping in Myvatn)
Day 9. Visit to whale wacthing in Husavík and visit to Husavík (sleep in Myvatn area)
Day 10. Godafoss and drive to Akureyri. You can visit the biggest fiord in Iceland (sleep in Akureyri)
Day 11. Dalvík + Siglufjörður + Hófsos to Holmavík (west fiords, the most beautiful place in Iceland. Sleep in Holmavik)
Day 12. Road to Ísafjörður, a beautiful town in north-west Iceland (sleep in Ísafjörður).
Day 13. Dynjandi (the most beautiful waterfall in Iceland), Rauðisandur, (golden beach) and Latrabjarg (sometime you can see Greenland from here). Sleep in Bildudalur.
Day 14.  Road to Grundarfjörður
Day 15. Snæfellsness peninsula (where Julius Verne book... from there to Etna). Berserkjahraun, Saxholl, Skardsvík, Djupalonssandur and Dritvík. (Sleep in Arnastapi)
Day 16. Road to Reykjavík visiting Borganes and Akranes visiting the highest waterfall in Iceland: Glymur. (sleep in Borganes)
Day 17. One Day in Reykjavík (shoppin) (sleep in Reykjavík)
Day 18. Blue lagoon - Reykjavík

This is Wonderful!!!

Our plan is now sorted

Now, just to fill in the TBDs. I will be researching all the waterfalls etc., and the glacier view points and deciding :)

One question, 3 nights in Northwest, do you recommend staying in Ísafjörður or should we be more central like in
Húnavellir

Enough to see (waterfalls etc.,) for 2 full days there?

Re: Iceland early october (2 weeks+) suggestions needed

A follow up question
Myvatn - 2 nights or 3 nights. If you recommend three we will do 5 in south iceland + 1 near glacier lagoon (about 50kms ahead)

Second
Myvatn to Ísafjörður is it doable in one day? 646km = 10 hours? or more?

If its 10-11 hours, then we will spend 3 nights in myvatn lake area and then simply start early morning for Ísafjörður.

Third:
Ísafjörður to Snæfellsnes -> Long drive (6-8 hours?)

BTW, the south iceland location we have chosen is around VIK
63.423237, -18.938395

So we will stop by post Glacier lagoon as driving directly to myvatn from here is going to be tough!

Hello again,

I recommend you to sleep in different locations so you will not need to go back everyday to the start point but I see you have choose more like a regular stay during your trip.

Myvatn to Ísafjörður in one day is a long journey, it is possible to be done but it is a long journey. You will need around 10 hours, so if you leave Myvatn at 8am you will be fine ;)

Ísafjörður to Snæfellsnes is also a long drive, around 7 hours.

Thanks!
Since we are taking self catering, and would not like to shift out again and again, we decided to take this south location.
On our trips we enjoy relaxing by the ocean, and this location was amazing.

Our final flan is now
5 nights in south
1 nights near Jokusarlon
3 nights near Akyureri
3 nights near Heydalur (so our drive is shorter)
4 nights at Snaeffles national park!

I am told there would not be any birds in october in the westfjords. I guess we will have to give the puffins a miss!

How do you rate auto.is. They have a very good offer for off season. carsiceland(the company run by former tour operators) is more expensive, and there is no free GPS on offer too!

Good to know!
Keeping fingers crossed for end september.

We will now rent from carsiceland.com. Lot of people give very good recommendation.

I have an unrelated question regarding supermarket prices.

Is there an online supermarket site where I can check prices of stuff like
meat, milk, eggs, potatoes, lettuce.

We will buy raw and cook in our cottage

Hello,

I would recommend you to buy food at Bonus (www.bonus.is).
It is the cheapest option in Iceland.

I don't know about a online supermarket option
