Iceland in solo Oct 21st to Nov 7th

Yannick from Quebec
Bonjour,

I'm currently browsing the internet in the search of amazing things to do late October and early November in Iceland. My plan is to go solo, rent a car or hitch hike my way around, camp for the first 2 weeks and then enjoy Airwaves with a few friends.

Now I know some of you will try to discourage me to camp in October because it's cold. If this is reassuring to you, i've done 4 weeks of winter camping across central and north western USA in January and February and I've hit night temperature in the lower -20's celcius, a lot of times. I am well equiped for winter camping, I have experience in winter hiking, and i'm totally aware of the climate and it's challenge. I also live in Québec city, wich is at least as cold as Iceland in the Winter :)

I understand most of the trails and campsite might be closed at that time of the year. I'll stay conservative on the hikes but i'd like to feel alone in the world. Would you have any suggestions?

As far as camping goes. I read alot of contradicting information about it. Some say that I can pretty much camp wherever I want as long as i'm not in a national park or on a private propriety. Some others are saying I can probably camp in all national parks or ask private land owners to camp on their land. What do you say? I guess I'll try to camp as close to the shoreline as possible since this will probably be the place the temperature is the warmest.

Also, beside trolls and sheeps, what type of wildlife would like to share my lunch? Anything bigger than foxes? Do I have to hang, hide of store my food in any ways while camping in the back country?

Finaly I dream about kayaking and camping in a fjord. I know Iceland has alot of fjord but is this a real thing? am I just day dreaming :(

Thank you all for the replies, if any reply comes, and I am totally looking forward to this trip. I hope to see great things, meet fun people and experience something unique!

Hey!

You have a great plan ahead ;)

There are campings open all around Iceland during winter time so you will be fine. If you have experienced -20ºC Iceland will be totally fine. You will be able to park everywhere you want, it is legal in Iceland!

No worries about animals in Iceland, they are quiet and good!

Hello Yannick from Quebec,

The law is changing in this regard and now it is not legal to park/camp anywhere.
That is why the Government in collaboration with local campsites have enabled these places where travelers can spend the night.

Warm regards,
Berglind
