Need Help with 13-Day Itinerary

wanderlust
Good Morning. My sister, her boyfriend, and I are traveling to Iceland for the first time, celebrating her 40th birthday and his birthday.  We have a love for hiking and photography!!! Fantastic blog, Iceland 24!!!  After reading as much as I could from various websites, I am reaching out to everyone for guidance.

Thoughts to keep in mind:
1. Interested in staying at hostels to keep our cost down. We know this is busy season so we may not be so lucky. We would like to book lodging as soon as possible but cannot until we firm our itinerary.
2. 4x4 vs family car: Can we rent a family car and change over to a 4x4 at some point in the trip?  If yes, at which point should we change? Does enyone know how much gas we can expect to pay for 13 days (rough estimate)?
3. We will arrive KEF on 8 Aug and depart 20 KEF (13 days in country).
4. We've planned somewhat of an itinerary but are flexible to changing since we would love to see Westfjords after reading Iceland 24's blog.

Thank you in advance.
Tway (mindsoulbody@gmail.com)

Hello!!!!

Thank you very much for your message,
We are going to help you ;)

Does enyone know how much gas we can expect to pay for 13 days (rough estimate)?
It could be around 450€ if you are renting a 4x4 ;)

Day 1 (8 Aug arrive KEF at 930AM)
• Rental Car, Groceries
• Geysir, Gullfoss, Þingvellir National Park (tectonic plates), Bruarfoss
• Route 36 to 35 to 1
• Car type: family car
• Lodging: Should we stay in Selfoss or Hella?

We recommend you to stay in Hella

Day 2 (9 Aug)
• From Hella, we head into remote highland area of Landmannalaugar and Fjallabak
• We read about this area and were undecided if this was worth a trip??
• Route: 271 to 272 to 26 to 268 to 264
• Car type: family car
• Lodging: Where should we stay?

You will need here a 4x4, and YES this is something you must see!!!
We wrote an article about Landmannalaugar on Iceland24
http://iceland24.blogspot.com/2013/06/landmannalaugar.html

Day 3 (10 Aug)
• From Landmannalaugar region, we head to Seljalandsfoss and drive along Eyjafjoll
• We read about Landmannalauger area and were undecided if this was worth a trip
• Route: 271 to 272 to 26 to 268 to 264 to 1 (Is this correct?)
• Car type: family car
• Lodging: Where should we stay? Skogar or Vik?

We will change a bit this plan and we recommend you to stay one more day in Landmannalaugar trying to mix Day 4 and Day 5. Anyway, we recommend Vik :)

Day 4 (11 Aug)
• Pinnacles of Reynisdrangar and black lava sand beaches near Vik
• Stop at moss covered lava fields of Eldraun
• Shoot the glaciated peaks of Mt. Oraefajokull at Skaftfell
• Route: 1
• Car type: family car
• Lodging: Where should we stay? Skaftfell or Svartifoss?

As we said, we will combine day 3 and day 4 in one, so you can spend a bit more in Landmannalaugar.

Day 5 (12 Aug)
• Visit Svartifoss waterfall surrounded by basalt columns. Is there some places that we can photograph these amazing basalt columns?
• Where can we take a tractor trailer ride to Ingolfshofoi to photograph Puffins? Is there a more economical way to see Puffins?
• Photograph glacier lagoons and Jokulsarlon
• Route: 1
• Car type: family car
• Lodging: Where should we stay so that we can near the glaciers at sunrise/sunset to photograph?

Do you want to see Puffins and whales for free? There is an island in north Iceland call Grimsey where you can see thousands of Puffins. The boat leaves from Dalvík (Landflutningar-Samskip / Ranarbraut 2b / 620 Dalvik / Tel.: 458-8970Fax: 458-8971 / samskip@samskip.is) and the trip takes 3 hours, you stay in the island 4 hours and them you come back to Dalvík. It is an amazing trip with great views, birds and more "outside tourism".

Dalvík is up north, so we will mention this later. Grimsey is inside the polar circle :)

Coming back to your question, we recommend you to wait until sunset to photograph! It is just amazing!!!

Day 6 (13 Aug)
• Travel off beaten path of Heinabergslon (Do we need a 4x4?)
• Vestrahorn to photograph jagged peaks
• Return to Jokulsarlon for another night/day photo
• Route: 1
• Car type: family car
• Lodging: Where should we stay so that we can near the glaciers at sunrise/sunset to photograph?

Two much time in this area, we recommend you to keep going, you will probably need more time with our changes ;)

Day 7 (14 Aug)
• Travel to more jagged coastal peaks of Eystrahorn
• Winding roads ahead
• Would this be a tough drive day to Myvatn?
• Route: 1
• Car type: family car
• Lodging: Uncertain of the driving duration to Myvatn. Where should we stay?

Yes, this will be a tough drive to Myvatn but we agree to do it like this (if you take this trip to the Island in north Iceland you will need it).

Day 8 (15 Aug)

• Myvatn to photograph geothermal steam vents, volcanic formations, craters
• Route: 1
• Car type: family car
• Lodging: Uncertain of the where we should stay since we are uncertain if we should head to Westfjords from here or travel south to Askja, Mt. Heroubreid, and then to Dettifoss, Jökulsárgljufur National Park and then take the highlands home via Kjölur Highlands Route.

We recommend you to try Askja since it is just the best place you will see in our country. It will be a long day trip with your 4x4 but swimming in an active volcano... Moon landscapes...

Day 9 (16 Aug)

Myvatn to photograph geothermal steam vents, volcanic formations, craters
• Route: 1
• Lodging: Uncertain of the where we should stay since we are uncertain if we should head to Westfjords from here or travel south to Askja, Mt. Heroubreid, and then to Dettifoss, Jökulsárgljufur National Park and then take the highlands home via Kjölur Highlands Route.

Do you want to know what to do? Just check our great article:
http://iceland24.blogspot.com/2013/05/top-20-things-to-do-in-lake-myvatn-trip.html

Day 10 (17 Aug)

Staying in Myvatn, we recommend you to take a day trip to Husavík and them ásbyrgi... It is just incredible, totally must do...

We recommend you to finish this day coming back to Myvatn to take a relax bath in Myvatn Nature Baths :)

Day 11 (18 Aug)

Trip to Grimsey ;)

Day 12 (19 Aug)
• Return to Reykjavik
• Blue Lagoon
• Shopping

Perfect ;)

Day 13 (20 Aug)
• Flight departs at 11AM
• Return car rental

Let us know what you think about this suggestions!
We can keep working on your plan, you are going to have an amazing trip :)

Re: Need Help with 13-Day Itinerary

Wanderlust
Takk...you offered great suggestions.  We re-read your Landmannaulagar posting on your Iceland24 Blog.  You mentioned that:

WHERE TO SLEEP

Camping: In the nature reserve area, you may only camp at Landmannalaugar, Landmannahellir and Hrafntinnusker. Outside the area you may camp anywhere where you don´t spoil anything. There are camping facilities where there are huts and there you have to pay something.

Is there an email address we can contact for reservations to stay in these "huts"?  Also, what should we plan to bring with us to stay in these huts to keep warm throughout the night.  It must be very cold in the highland regions in these huts?  (Sleeping bags? Lots and lots of layers to wear.)

We look forward to hearing from you again.

Does My Itinerary Hit the Mark?

Hey!
It is so wonderful to have the opportunity to run this past someone with more experience.
I know we don't have the Golden Circle or Westfjords on this...we might need to make another trip.  :)
I'm sure our drive times are a little off - I know I need to allot more drive time as well.  Google maps is where I'm getting that, and I probably need to add about 20%.

Iceland 2018

Day 1 - KEF to Stori Napur. 2.5 hr drive time.
Land and rent car

Viking World Museum – very close to airport.  7 am open.

Raufarholshellir – lava cave.   I think it is free, but maybe starting to charge for tours? ?

Hveragerdi - geothermal town
We will probably spend most of our time relaxing here and Reykjadalur.

Reykjadalur – hike to the hotspring river.  40 min from Reyjkavik to Reykjadalur. Southeast.
20 minutes from Reykjadalur to Selfoss. traveling southeast.

Urridafoss – big waterfall.  Maybe not see?

STAY IN STORI NAPUR

Day 2 - Stori Napur to Landmannalaugar.  2 hr drive time.
Thjorsardalur Valley – full of beautiful waterfalls.

Gjain waterfall -30 minutes hike from Stong. Or go past Stong and park in the lot and hike right down to it. (maybe better)

Hjálparfoss – another huge waterfall that dumps into a lake then out through a break in the rock wall.  Just a short walk from the road.  Maybe only 30-45 min here.

Þjóðveldisbærinn Stöng- Reconstructed Viking Longhouse and farmstead.

Haifoss - parking lot on south side of falls.  Our stay here just depends on how long we want to walk it.

Sigöldugljúfur

Landmannalaugar – hot spring here

STAY IN LANDMANNALAUGAR - huts

Day 3 . Landmannalaugar to Vik.  4 hours of driving.
Go to Maelifell then back out to 208 and south to Vik.

Laki – not super important, but might be cool to see if we have enough time.

Veidivotn – lakes.  Might be able to get a view from above while we are driving. Look for it.

Maelifell -On the F210 Landmannalaugar . Green cone in ash valley. I guess you just spend a bit photographing it.  Maybe 30 min.

STAY SOMEWHERE NEAR VIK

Day 4. Vik. Southern Iceland
Seljandsafoss  – hike up the waterfall. We gotta hike this.  It's so fun. Give it 3 hours.

Gljufrabui Waterfall – hidden falls in a cave.  Just drive past Seljandsafoss. Have to walk the creek – feet will get wet.  Maybe two hours?

Seljavallalaug pool - What's better after a few hikes than a dip in a hot pool?  Maybe 1.5 hours?  About a 20 min walk.

Skogafoss– pretty but not extremely time consuming

Solheimasandur Plane Wreck - I think it is a hike to this.  Do we want to see it?

STAY IN VIK AGAIN

Day 5 - Vik  - Thorsmork
Spend as much time in Vik and area as we want.  2 hour drive to Thorsmork valley.

Dyrholaey – want to spend a few hours here – and at the secret beach.

Reynishverfi – the black sand beach is awesome.  Maybe stay here somewhere.  Take that road past the house on the side of the mountain to get to Reynishverfi.  We can eat at the restaurant there.

Markarfljótsgljúfur Canyon - Thorsmork

Day 6 - Thorsmork to Skaftafell.  3.5 hrs of driving.
1 hr drive to Fjaðrárgljúfur. 1.2 miles hike. Not sure how long to give us here.....- it looks awesome.

Skaftafell  hiking.
Svartifoss - about a 2 hr hike.

STAY IN SKAFTAFELL

Day 7– Jokulsarlon Area - 1 hr drive from Skaftafell to Jokulsarlon
Leave time for hiking in Skaftafell - Svartifoss and all that.  In case we spend all our time in  Fjaðrárgljúfur the day before.

Fjallsárlón - smaller glacier lagoon just before you get to Jokulsarlon

Jokulsarlon and black sand beach:  we want to be here when the tide goes out. Sunset is perfect here.

STAY AS CLOSE TO THE LAGOON AS POSSIBLE

Day 8 - Jokulsarlon to Seydisfjordur. 4 hours drive time.
Lys and Justin do zodiac boat tour on the lagoon. 9:30 or 11AM booking.
Give ourselves some time to enjoy the beach - probably won't hit the road 2PM.

Vestrahorn (M) – Might want to spend an hour or two walking along the beach.

Batman Mountain

Skateboard down Rt 93.

STAY IN SEYDISFJORDUR

Day 9 - Seydisfjordur to Myvatn 2.5 hours drive time.
Myvatn Area:
Myvatn Nature Baths
Dettifoss- most powerful waterfall in Iceland.  You can walk right up to the top of
it! 20 min walk to the falls.
Dimmuborgir lava field and Grjótagjá cave with a geothermal beautiful pool in it.

Lofthellir Lava Ice Caves– I think you have to go on a tour to see this, and won't have ice in the summer.  Bummer.
Skútustaðir – craters on south side of Lake Myvatn.
Namaskard – really geothermal area.  Mudpools, hot pots.  Very pretty.
Krafla - crater, volcanic area.  Car park next to the rim.  To walk rim takes an hour. The caldera is full of amazing bubbling pools.  Very pretty.

Godafoss  – waterfall with lots of history.

Aldeyjarfoss  – awesome.  There are a bunch of waterfalls on this river Skjálfandafljót.  All are beautiful!

Askja – Caldera with two lakes in it.  The smaller one is really beautiful.  Can be bathed in.

STAY SAME PLACE IN MYVATN

Day 10 – Myvatn
STAY IN MYVATN AGAIN

Day 11 - Myvatn to Stykkisholmur - 6 hours drive

IS HOFSOS WORTH THE DETOUR?

Hvitserkur rock formation on the Vatnsnes Peninsula (used to be an evil troll)

STAY IN STYKKISHOLMUR

Day 12 - Stykkisholmur and Snaefellsness Peninsula
Kirkjufell Mountain  – awesome.

Snaefellsjoekull National Park - not sure what to see here?

Dritvik and Djupalonssandur - really cool beach and hills with lava rock formations jutting out everywhere.  Very unique.

Londrangar-  amazing cliffs and you can go down to the beach.  There are tide pools here.

Hellnar – town by the ocean.  Rock formation, Valasnös here. Colorful cave, badstofa cave here too.

Arnastapi- town with cool arch you can walk across.  Also monument here.  An arctic tern colony lives here.

Vatnshellir lava cave is here, but it doesn’t look as cool as the other one.  It is where Jules Verne was inspired to write Journey to the Center of the Earth, though.

Day 13 - Snaefellsjoekull to KEF.  3 hours drive.

It would be nice to spend another at least half day in the peninsula before heading back to KEF airport.

Akranes Lighthouse- not much else there, though.  Not the prettiest place in Iceland.  If we happen to be there it would be a nice stop to see lighthouses.  You can go up in one for a few hours each day.  10-12 I think.

Glymur  – Iceland’s tallest waterfall

Barnafoss -

Depending what airline we use, we might try to catch a flight this night.  If we fly WOW, we might need to stay near the airport and catch the early flight the next morning.

WOW flights to Cork are at 6:30AM!
Dublin is also 6:30AM!

Have nice trip!

This is okay. It is true that Raufarholshellir only can be visited by guided tours now. I recommend you Urridafoss.

Perfect day. When are you planing to come? dates?
You will love Háifoss.

It is impossible to do all these things. I´d recommend you to drive F208 to the South trough Eldgjá and then to Vík.

Day 4.

Gljufrabui from Seljandsafoss will take you no more than 15minutes and then the time you will be there.
Seljavallalaug from the parking around 20min.
I think is worth it to see the plane. One our walking from the parking.

Perfect day. I like it. Remember that you need a real 4x4 to get to Þörsmork. Please do not cross Krosá with any vehicle. It is so dangerous.

Perfect! I love this day in your itinerary.

Good plan! Sunrise is also amazing so do that if you have the chance. :)

I´d recommend you to visit Hengifoss and Litlanesfoss in Eglisstaðir if you have time.

Impossible to do that the same day. Askja caldera take one day.
Lofthellir has always ice super and wintertime. You do not mention Dettifoss.... please visit it! ;)

Day 10 – Myvatn
STAY IN MYVATN AGAIN

May be Askja today.

Day 11 - Myvatn to Stykkisholmur - 6 hours drive

IS HOFSOS WORTH THE DETOUR?

Hvitserkur rock formation on the Vatnsnes Peninsula (used to be an evil troll)

Too long driving distance. If the swimming pool is open YES I´d recommend you to stop in Hofsós and Glaumbæer Museum only if you have time.

Jules Verne was inspired in the crater of the Snæfellsnes volcano not in the cave. If you see Lofthellir and Raufarholshellir this will not be impressive for you. There is a tour to the top of the volcano that you can try.

Akranes not worth it. I like Glymur. It is tall but not so much water.
