Need itinerary help for Iceland trip in March 2015

This post was updated on .
Hello,

I and my sister are planning a trip to Iceland from 18 Mar 15 to 27 Mar 15 for about 9 days.
I understand that the northern part of Iceland may be inaccessible and would like to focus our trip in the South and South East part of Iceland. However we would like to go to Lake Myvatn and Akureyri if its possible in you opinion. We are predominantly doing this trip for seeing the northern lights and do glacier hiking tours.

Would like your help in a possible itinerary for above 9 days.

Also what kind of car should we hire, 4x4 (not experienced in driving a 4x4 but can learn over the course of the next few months) or a normal car would be fine?

Thank you

Hello,

I would recommend you to see them from Myvatn lake. You don't need to hire a tour or excursion!!!!
Check our article about Northern Lights.

I am still going through your suggestions.
I would like to go to the north all the way to Akureyri and Lake Myvatn but my only worry is it possible to go there in March. I mean wouldnt the ring road be covered in snow and wouldnt the weather be highly unpredictable.

Do you think it would be convenient to drive on the ring road in March in the north??

Regards

Hi,
Was busy with work for months to plan about our holidays but it had to be done sooner or later nonetheless.
Anyway I have planned the following places and activities in Iceland let me know what your think.
We arent too comfortable of driving all the way to northern Iceland considering the harsh weather conditions and as its a holiday we want to take it slow and not be in a rush.

So here is our plan

18 Mar 15 - Reykjavik
(Land at Keflavik at around 3.30 pm, reach Reykjavik by about 5 pm considering emmigration /customs and transportation by flybus), Go out for a walk in the evening and explore the city.

19 Mar 15 - Reykjavik, also do a northern lights tour.

20 Mar 15 - Reykjavik, do a lava caving tour at Leidarendi Caves.

We hope to see the following at Reykjavik
Reykjavik 871 +/- 2 The Settlement Exhibition
National Museum of Iceland
Árbær Open Air museum
Vikin Maritime Museum
National Gallery of Iceland
Harpa
Saga Museum
Vidley island ferry ride + Imagine peace tower
Hallgrimskirkja
Flea Market at Kolaportið
Perlan
Lake Tjornin & old Reykjavik
Waterfront and Solfar sculpture
Grotta Lighthouse
Einar Jonsson Museum

21 Mar 15 - Hire a car and go via the following route:
Reykjavik-Hvalfjordur-Reykholt (see Hraunfossar and Barnafoss)-Stykkisholmur-Grundarfjordur
(thinking of staying at Grundarfjordur so we get a early head start for Snaefellsnes National Park the next day, what would you suggest??)

22 Mar 15 - Stykkisholmur/Grundarfjordur - Snaefellsnes National Park-Vatnashellir Cave-Akranes or Borganes
(We will hike on a few marked trails in Snaefellness, like Ondverdarnes,Djupalonssandur, Londragar, and Hellnar-Arnarstapi)
(We will stay overnight at either Borganes or Akranes)
Do you think all the hikes are possible in March or we may encounter bad weather and snow??

23 Mar 15 - Akranes or Borganes - Golden Circle with snorkeling at Silfra and see Gjain.
Can you recommend a place to stay as we will head to south Iceland from there??

24 Mar 15 Skógafoss - Seljalandsfoss-Reynisfjara – Dyrhólaey-Vik, also do a snowmobiling tour on Mydrasjokull
(stay overnight at Vik)

25 Mar 15 Vik-hike to Fjadrargljufur-Foss a Sidu-Skaftafell National Park-Svartifoss- and a few other hikes within Skaftafell with a Glacier hiking tour in Skaftafell

Can you recommend a place to stay around Skaftafell??

26 Mar 15 Jokulsarlon-Hofn-Stokness - Also do a Guided Ice Cave tour

27 Mar 15 Drive back to Keflavik-Blue Lagoon or an ATV tour in Reykjanes Peninsula-Stay around Keflavik

28 Mar 15 Fly back home

Goes without saying that when we are driving by ourselves we will try and hunt for northern lights based on the forecasts.

So please let me know what do you think. Also can we do the above including the hikes in March considering the weather and snow.

Do you feel we have time to include some place we have missed out on or should we not visit a certain place. Any advice on the northern lights, I have read your previous post in regards to northern lights.

Looking forward to your views.

Thanks for sharing your trip,
I am please to help you with some comments :)

So here is our plan

18 Mar 15 - Reykjavik
(Land at Keflavik at around 3.30 pm, reach Reykjavik by about 5 pm considering emmigration /customs and transportation by flybus), Go out for a walk in the evening and explore the city.

Perfect

19 Mar 15 - Reykjavik, also do a northern lights tour.

Good! I recommend a super Jeep tour if you want to see northern lights from the mountains :)

20 Mar 15 - Reykjavik, do a lava caving tour at Leidarendi Caves.

We hope to see the following at Reykjavik
Reykjavik 871 +/- 2 The Settlement Exhibition
National Museum of Iceland
Árbær Open Air museum

Do you think all the hikes are possible in March or we may encounter bad weather and snow??

It depends on weather...

23 Mar 15 - Akranes or Borganes - Golden Circle with snorkeling at Silfra and see Gjain.
Can you recommend a place to stay as we will head to south Iceland from there??

We recommend you to stay in a place close by the golden circle. For example http://www.hotelranga.is

I would stay directly in Hofn

26 Mar 15 Jokulsarlon-Hofn-Stokness - Also do a Guided Ice Cave tour

Perfect

27 Mar 15 Drive back to Keflavik-Blue Lagoon or an ATV tour in Reykjanes Peninsula-Stay around Keflavik

Perfect

28 Mar 15 Fly back home

Do you feel we have time to include some place we have missed out on or should we not visit a certain place. Any advice on the northern lights, I have read your previous post in regards to northern lights.

Would not you like to drive around Iceland instead of focusing on south/west Iceland?

Hi thanks for replying.

We would really love to go around entire Iceland but we are not to confident of going to northern Iceland and Westernfjords in March. But I am going to come to Iceland again in summer in 2016 and that time I will look forward to going north and to westernfjords and doing all the activities we could not do in this trip.

However we are still considering going to Easternfjords in the forthcoming trip in March. Can you recommend some places we must/can visit in Easternfjords and how can we suitably modify our itinerary to include them as well.

Do you think hiking in skaftafell (easier trails) will be possible in March?

Also any advice on the clothes to carry considering the temperatures and weather in March?

Thanks once again.

Hello,

You are welcome!

I think it might be possible to make the easier hiking in Skaftafell ;)
About clothes: bring warm clothes, 100% security is good in iceland
