Planning a 15 day trip - second half of April

babrein
Hello!

We are planning a trip of 15 days to Iceland on the second half of April (3 people). We have already rented a 4x4 car and would like to explore the country.

It's our first trip to Iceland and we would like to: enjoy nature!, hike, ski a day or two if possible, ice walk, see whales and puffins, take nice pictures and maybe catch the northern lights if it's not too late already.

I still need to read your southern Iceland guide and do some more research on my one, but if you could:
 - Point me out to the best places to keep investigating
 - Also, if you are aware some of the areas might not be accessible during this period of the year, please let me know! :)
 - We are pretty open and haven't booked our accomodation yet. We are a bit worried that it might be difficult to find many open places at this time of the year. Will this be the case?
 - Will it be possible to drive around the full ring road at this time of the year? Which direction should we start with (north first or south first?).

I will keep responding with my itinerary as I advance with it but it would be really helpful if you can help me begin.

Thank you for your help, your blog is excellent!!

Ana

Hello Ana,

Thank you very much for your message,
We love to help people!

- Point me out to the best places to keep investigating

It is better if you just read our articles first! They are quite fine and you will get a lot of ideas :)

- Also, if you are aware some of the areas might not be accessible during this period of the year, please let me know! :)

All Highland roads are close in April-May

 - We are pretty open and haven't booked our accomodation yet. We are a bit worried that it might be difficult to find many open places at this time of the year. Will this be the case?

It is not difficult since it is not high season... Do not worry about that!

 - Will it be possible to drive around the full ring road at this time of the year? Which direction should we start with (north first or south first?).

Yes, it is possible! I will do south first and then north.

:)

You can write down your route here and we will help you with comments!

Hello! Thanks for your help. I have widened my research and have a tentative itinerary that I'd like to double check with you and a few questions in the itinerary and possible alternative options.

Logistics: 4x4 vehicule rented
Dates: arriving 11 April at night - departing 27 April morning from KEF
We have planned the itinerary clockwise

Additional questions:
- Northern lights: I guess it would be best to try to catch them towards the beginning of our trip as the latest we get the more difficult it will be to see them as it's the end of the season. I see there are tours from Reyk. or Akureyri but - is there any "free" recommended area to try to spot them during the first part of our itinerary?
- 2 day trek from Asbyrgi to Dettifoss: I have read this is an interesting option, would it be recommended in April? And, as it is not a circular trail, how would we return to our car? Where could we sleep for the night?
- Landmannnalaugar: is there any chance we might get there towards the end of our trip or will it be inaccesible as it looks like...?
- We have left out the west fjords as the roads are probably not at their best -would you recommend us to include them or to stick to our initial plan?

Itinerary:

- Day 1: arrival, sleep in Reyk
- Day 2: Snafellsnes peninsula - sleep somewhere there - where would you recommend?
- Day 3: Sandarkrokur - to visit Hindisnk and the seals, Huitserkur and Skagarfjordur...
- Day 4: Aureyri or Husavik to sleep - whales + Asbyrgi + Nature Baths - will Asbyrgi be accessible at this time of the year? Where would you recommend us to sleep out of the two?
- Day 5: Husavik or Myvatn- Where would you recommend us to sleep out of the two?
- Day 6: Myvatn
- Day 7: Myvatn
- Day 8: spare day??? to decide when we close the itinerary
- Day 9: Ekifjordur/ Seydisfjordur sleep - hiking in Borgafjordur Eysri
- Day 10: Jokul farmstay/ Hofn sleep - cross country skiing - would you recommend us to do it here?
- Day 11: Jokul farmstay/ Hofn sleep - visit the park
- Day 12: Vik
- Day 13: Westman Islands - we thought it would be easier to visit these Islands rather than Grimsey as the ferry to Grimsey does not allow you to return on the same day in April. Would you support this idea? Would you recommend us to stay for 2 nights in the island? What could we do there during the time? Should we take our car to the island?
- Day 14: Westman Islands
- Day 15: Hella
- Day 16: Reyk: blue lagoon, etc.
- Day 17: return home

Thank you so much for your help!!

Hello again,

Thanks for your message,

Additional questions:
- Northern lights: I guess it would be best to try to catch them towards the beginning of our trip as the latest we get the more difficult it will be to see them as it's the end of the season. I see there are tours from Reyk. or Akureyri but - is there any "free" recommended area to try to spot them during the first part of our itinerary?

You can see them everywhere AND I recommend you to check our article about northern lights. We explain everything you need to know!

- 2 day trek from Asbyrgi to Dettifoss: I have read this is an interesting option, would it be recommended in April? And, as it is not a circular trail, how would we return to our car? Where could we sleep for the night?

I will not recommend you to do it in April ;)

- Landmannnalaugar: is there any chance we might get there towards the end of our trip or will it be inaccesible as it looks like...?

It will not be possible ;)

- We have left out the west fjords as the roads are probably not at their best -would you recommend us to include them or to stick to our initial plan?

Itinerary:

- Day 1: arrival, sleep in Reyk

Perfect

- Day 2: Snafellsnes peninsula - sleep somewhere there - where would you recommend?

Perfect

- Day 3: Sandarkrokur - to visit Hindisnk and the seals, Huitserkur and Skagarfjordur...

Perfect

- Day 4: Aureyri or Husavik to sleep - whales + Asbyrgi + Nature Baths - will Asbyrgi be accessible at this time of the year? Where would you recommend us to sleep out of the two?

You will be able to visit Asbyrgi, no problem. I will recommend you to sleep in Myvatn area.

- Day 5: Husavik or Myvatn- Where would you recommend us to sleep out of the two?

Same

- Day 6: Myvatn
- Day 7: Myvatn
- Day 8: spare day??? to decide when we close the itinerary

Maybe a super tour from Myvatn ?

- Day 9: Ekifjordur/ Seydisfjordur sleep - hiking in Borgafjordur Eysri

Perfect

- Day 10: Jokul farmstay/ Hofn sleep - cross country skiing - would you recommend us to do it here?

I recommend you to read our article about east iceland and south iceland.

- Day 11: Jokul farmstay/ Hofn sleep - visit the park
- Day 12: Vik

Perfect

- Day 13: Westman Islands - we thought it would be easier to visit these Islands rather than Grimsey as the ferry to Grimsey does not allow you to return on the same day in April. Would you support this idea? Would you recommend us to stay for 2 nights in the island? What could we do there during the time? Should we take our car to the island?

Thats a good idea, I will stay just one night.

- Day 14: Westman Islands
- Day 15: Hella
- Day 16: Reyk: blue lagoon, etc.
- Day 17: return home

Perfect!

Let me know what you think about my comments,
