to Iceland for the Winter holidays with 3 little kids -- will it be fun?!

tanya
Hi and so great that I have this chance to ask my questions!

We live in Florida, and our kids almost never play with snow. They are 9 & 6 year young boys and 2 year young girl.

We would love to fly to Iceland for 5-7 days around Christmas and New Year time.

I have a few questions and somehow I can's find the answers on-line.

1. Snowy place in Iceland location.
For us, it would be so great and important to build a couple of snowmen together with the kids. I've heard that sometimes it rains right after New Year. If it rains all the time in Reykjavik while we are there, would it be possible to reach such a place in Iceland by the car, where there would be for sure some snow for the snowman and doing snow angels? Where would it be on the map if such place exists?

2. Healthy food store+water.
What store could you recommend in Reykjavik for buying healthy food for the kids, as I hear that the restaurants are very expensive. Is it true that you can drink water from the sink in Iceland and it's healthy (i.e. without fluoride)?

3. Restaurant.
Would you know kids-friendly restaurant with not too high prices and local cuisine, ideally where locals dine please, not too touristy?

4. Blue Lagoon.
Would a Blue Lagoon be a good idea during Holidays, or it would be too crowded, cold or difficult with kids while there? Also, does Blue Lagoon have lights and is worth visiting in the evening hours, or it is beautiful there only during the day time (as we need to buy the time there in advance)?

5. Waterfalls' location.
If somebody could give me the exact location of the big waterfall in Iceland, and if the water freezes or still runs there during Holiday time?

6. Natural Hot springs for bathing.
Would you know any natural hot springs where we could go in the water (natural baths with warm and almost hot water) and their exact location please. The least commercial these hot springs are, the more we'd love to drive there!

7. Do you have often snow during the Holidays in Reykjavik or not that often?

8. Do you have flights delays/cancellations due to the weather often in Iceland during the Holiday time, or not?

9. Do you have any winter-time outdoor park for the kids in Reykjavik or around?

10. Is sledding on the dogs could be possible with the kids on the same sleds, or not really? Which sledding company could you recommend please?

Thank you so very much for your help and time!!!!

Hello Tanya,

1. Snowy place in Iceland location.
For us, it would be so great and important to build a couple of snowmen together with the kids. I've heard that sometimes it rains right after New Year. Bláfjöl is the place. Just 25minutes driving from Reykjavik.

2. Healthy food store+water.
What store could you recommend in Reykjavik for buying healthy food for the kids, as I hear that the restaurants are very expensive. Is it true that you can drink water from the sink in Iceland and it's healthy (i.e. without fluoride)?

In all the supermarkets you have a department with healthy-organic food. I recommend you Bónus and Hagkaup stores.

3. Restaurant.
Would you know kids-friendly restaurant with not too high prices and local cuisine, ideally where locals dine please, not too touristy?

All the restaurants in Iceland are kids-friendly. I recommend you Gló restaurant in Reykjavik.

Blue Lagoon is a great experience. I recommend you a visit after 5pm.

5. Waterfalls' location.
If somebody could give me the exact location of the big waterfall in Iceland, and if the water freezes or still runs there during Holiday time?

7. Do you have often snow during the Holidays in Reykjavik or not that often?

Yes, we do have it.

8. Do you have flights delays/cancellations due to the weather often in Iceland during the Holiday time, or not?

Sometimes yes we do have it.

9. Do you have any winter-time outdoor park for the kids in Reykjavik or around?

All the parks are winter-time outdoor at this time of the year.

Have a nice trip.

10. Is sledding on the dogs could be possible with the kids on the same sleds, or not really? Which sledding company could you recommend please?

May I ask you also this unusual question about Bláfjöl:

As we have a 2 year old girl, one of us adults will stay with her making a snowman, while another will try skiing/snowboarding with two other older kids.

If we buy 3 hour pass, could we pass this pass ( :) ) from one adult to another, taking turns during these 3 hours? The same with the rented skies and snowboard -- as we have almost the same feet size with my husband, could we exchange equipment taking turns? Is it allowed or not really? I'm just trying to figure out our budget before hand.

Thank you so much!!!

Helio,

I´d say YES this is possible. I recommend you to put the pass in a jacket that both can fit so you just exchange jacket and equipmment.

That is actually a crecer idea.
